COUNCIL PORTFOLIO JOB DESCRIPTIONS

General

The purpose of being a parish councillor is not primarily to “sit on council” once a month. Rather it is to give leadership to those involved in the activities under any particular Portfolio. Giving leadership requires:

bulletSomeone who can build a team
bulletWho can motivate their team
bulletWho can supervise their team and hold them accountable for what they have undertaken.

Thus a councillor’s work occurs between council meetings and needs considerable time and effort.

PROPERTY

The task is to maintain and develop our property. The councillor will have to build a team consisting of those who are responsible for the buildings and for the gardens, seeing to it that parishioners who have volunteered to help are drawn in, their work co-ordinated, help given where necessary, and their work appreciated. A major part of the councillors job is, with her(his) team to develop a vision for the development of the property, as well as care for it in its present state.

OUTREACH

This councillor’s task is to [1] oversee and develop our involvement with Emthonjeni through our “Golang” project; [2] to develop our outreaches into the Weltevreden Park community; [3] oversee present outreach projects; [4] develop further outreaches as the Lord leads.

WORSHIP

This portfolio should be responsible for everything that affects the services on Sundays, Tuesdays and Special days.

The leader should co-ordinate the following groups in consultation with the Minister and Deacons: Parish Ministers, Sacristans, Servers, Healing Ministry, Music Team, Overheads / Multi-media, Sound desk, Stewards, Flowers, Tea, Sunday School.

Tasks would involve planning meaningful and interesting services, assessing the needs of the congregations and providing different styles of services, ensuring that all know when services are happening so that rosters can be drawn up, etc.

MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT

This is a leadership role in the parish, over-seeing the library, house groups, Pawz (youth), Sunday School, the youth Bible Study on Sunday, parish ministers, life courses and bible studies. It includes liaising with the people in charge of the various ministries as well as being aware of what material they are using. The Councillor would have to meet with his/her team on a monthly basis and submit a written report before each council meeting.

The Councillor would also be required to attend all council meetings. This ensures that all ministries within the parish are focussed in the same direction and helps to prevent people going off on their own tangent. This portfolio requires a lot of time and prayer.

COMMUNITY BUILDING

This councillors’ responsibility is threefold: [1] to build a larger and better equipped caring team to provide for the needs of our members and to facilitate our development as a community; [2] particularly to develop the Area Warden structure as a functioning instrument of pastoral care; [3] to provide care for the carers.

PASTORAL CARE

This councillor’s responsibility is twofold: [1] to provide care for the Area Wardens; [2] to provide care for the parish councillors & clergy; [3] to ‘troubleshoot’ pastoral care, taking initiative to see where care needs to be given or further developed

COMMUNICATION

This portfolio aims at encouraging the flow of news and ideas in all directions within the parish. Relevant activities are:

bullet

Design, construction, launching and maintaining of the website.

bullet

Making available details of the parish’s main activities through signage (notice board, and street sign), electronic media (email and web site) printed media (pew bulletin, information leaflets and advertising) and verbal communications (announcements and notices).

bullet

Encouraging members to share their views on all aspects of parish activity.
