Thursday Morning Craft Group

The main emphasis of this group is on fellowship and friendship as we make items to further God’s work at St Michael’s. We have a short time of prayer with a reading and then we work on various crafting activities. This includes re-conditioning cards to raise funds for St Michael's and preparing various hand-crafted articles for sale to raise funds for outreach.

Eco Team

St Michaels is a registered Eco-Congregation and the Eco Team leads the parish in carrying out the responsibilties involved in being an Eco-Congregation.

Being an Eco-Congregation is a response to our faith commitment. It weaves caring for the world and creation into all aspects of life and work in a congregation. It encourages three core areas of involvement:

Ecological Spirituality - Concern for the Earth in learning about and expressing our faith:

As people of faith we can express gratitude and care for God’s world in all our celebrations and acts of workshop; in our teaching, preaching, praying and meditation and in group and private study.

Custodianship of God’s Gifts - Stewardship of the Earth’s bounty:

As people of faith, being called to care for the world and all that is in it, we turn our places of worship and homes into centres where we set an example of good earth-keeping practice. By living more thoughtfully, saving resources like water and energy and looking after what we have, we can turn good intentions into practical actions.

God’s People at Work in The World - Local and global community action:

The future life on our planet is threatened by human activities. Eco-congregations can lead the way to a more sustainable future by getting involved in community projects and networks and lobbying and working for better environmental standards and practices.

At St Mikes, we strive to:

  • promote sustainability and environmental awareness within the church
  • equip parishioners and the wider community to minimise our impact on this planet
  • create a respect for God’s creation amongst the church community
  • promote the conservation of our biodiversity

This is done by making information available, holding functions and environmental liturgy in special services to celebrate God’s creation and by drawing attention to the planet’s plight and local concerns. To this end an Environmental Policy (PDF download) was drafted and accepted by the Church Council in August 2009. The Eco-Team also networks with other Eco-Congregation Parishes in the Diocese. Visit the Eco-Corner and read our Eco-Corner Blog for more information on protecting our environment.

Visit www.jaei.org.za (Johannesburg Anglican Environmental Initiative) for more information about Eco-Congregations and the environmental response within the Johannesburg Diocese.

Friday Evening Socials

The Friday Evening Socials are all about having a good time and getting together at your second home for a meal, glass of something refreshing and maybe a bit of entertainment. We have been inviting friends to these evenings since 2005, and the people of St Mikes really enjoy not having to cook for at least one night of the month! Come for a meal, meet new people, make friends and share the love that resonates in our Church. The evening starts at 6pm on one Friday in the month. Check the pew leaflet, or the website for the dates.

From Bobotie and Bingo in January to our Big Braai in December, we have catered for many St Mike’s party people. Master Chef; Come Dine with Us; Lucky Legs competition (won by a man naturally) and an Arabian evening with Father Abraham. Karaoke; Passover Supper and an African themed meal of samp, beans and stew (with rice for the woosses).

We don’t just have fun and laughter, we make a few Rands - even from the measly amount we charge for admission (R30).

If you'd like to come along to a Social Evening, you'd be most welcome!

Intercultural Group

As a group, we aim to create an increased awareness of the wonderful diversity of cultures that are represented amongst the people of St Michael’s. We do this by using customised liturgies for occasions such as Africa Day, and by holding intercultural days where we address a particular aspect and discuss how it is viewed in the different South African cultures. Events like the International Food Day have done a lot to show off the cultural diversity of our parish. This portfolio focuses on the Scriptural principles that can be applied to our behaviour as we relate to others in diverse cultural settings. Ultimately, we aim to live by the second great commandment: “Love thy neighbour.”

Reitrees' Group

The ministry was officially initiated in November 2006 with 10 participating members ... all retirees. The aims were to make retirees feel useful and to offer caring services when emergency situations arose.

From March 2010, it was agreed that the Retirees Group would concentrate on matters directly related to the more elderly people in our congregation and in the Retirement Village next door.

Some highlights on the activities are:

  • Production of a pamphlet detailing concessions for pensioners (currently being updated).
  • Presentation/talk on the importance of being money-wise and planning for retirement.
  • Production of a guideline for keeping important documents (Wills, Policies, Tax etc.).
  • Professional talk on macula degeneration and how to cope with it.
  • Social outings to Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens.
  • Production of a photographic history of St Michael and All Angels - the first 25 years (currently on-going).
  • Assisting other ministries.
  • Arranging other social events such as musical mornings held in the Social Centre at the Village.
  • Arranging visits to places of interest on an ad hoc basis.

The Retirees Group has put together an information pamphlet on the administrative steps we should all take before we die, in order to make things easier for our loved ones. You can download the Be Prepared pamphlet here.

We have also put together a list of concessions for pensioners that are available in Weltevreden Park and the surrounding areas. You can download the Concessions for Pensioners pamphlet here.

Senior Citizen's Special Teas

Cake sales are arranged throughout the year. With the help of the tea ladies and the donations from the parish we sell the cakes and with the funds raised we have two very special tea parties for our Senior Citizens. This is so fulfilling and the reward is so great. If anyone would like to join in serving tea or sponsor a table, they would be most welcome. The dates of the teas will be announced in church and advertised in the pew leaflet.
