Music

We have three music teams at St Mike's. Each team specialises in a different style of music, but we all love worshipping God through music.

Choir: 7:30 on Sundays

Our focus is to lead the congregation and enhance the service with hymns and anthems. We welcome anyone who loves to sing and is a regular communicant at the 07h30 service. It is an advantage to read music, but not all our members do, so it should not deter anyone from joining the choir. At Advent and Christmas time, you may also wish to join the choir for a short time as we sing Advent and Christmas Carols.

Worship Band: 9:30 on Sundays

The band leads the worship with the singing of choruses and some hymns. We draw our music from a range of Christian worship songwriters, including Tim Hughes (and the Worship Central Team), Tim Read, Stuart Townend, Graham Kendrick and African spiritual choruses. We are supported by the team on the Sound Desk, who makes sure that the sound is well-balanced and conducive to worship. If you play a musical instrument and are a member of St Mikes who attends the 9:30 service, then why not consider joining the worship team?

Worship Band: 18:00 on Sundays

The band leads worship at the evening service. Some members of the band are also involved with playing music for Happening and other Christian meetings. If you play a musical instrument and are a member of St Mikes who attends the 18:00 service, then why not consider joining the worship team?

Parish Ministers

Parish ministers assist in the service of Holy Communion, or in any other service, at the request of the Priest. Duties include reading the scriptures and leading prayers that are not reserved for the ordained ministry and assisting in the administration of Holy Communion. They also perform other pastoral duties, not reserved for the ordained ministry, as the Bishop may determine.

Data Projector

The data projector team is responsible for operating the computer that displays the slides on the projector screen. We also record the sermons so that you can download them on the website.

If you'd like to join this group, all you need is to be proficient on a computer and quick to respond to the various changes in the service. We work on a roster system, so you'd be on duty about once a month.

Sacristans

Sacristans take care of all the necessary preparation of the sacred vessels for the celebration of the Eucharist. We count the wafers, fill the wine decanters, trim and change the candles and do all laundry pertaining to the Eucharist. We set everything up prior to each service.

Sound Desk

The sound desk team is responsible for setting up the sound system for the music teams before the respective services. This involves connecting the microphones, musical instruments and monitor speakers. Operation of the system includes balancing of voices and instruments and controlling the various speech microphones. The person on the sound desk works with the person operating the data projector to record the sermon. At the end of each service, the sound desk operator helps to pack away the equipment.

Stewards

The Stewards oversee the smooth running of all the services held in the church on Sundays. It is their job to meet and greet the people attending the church services and hand out the pew leaflets. They are also responsible for counting the number of persons at the service, facilitating collection and directing traffic during communion.

At the end of each service, the stewards count up the collection and tidy the church so that it is neat for the next service.
